It began as a day of giving thanks and sacrifice for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Similarly named festival holidays occur in Germany, and Japan. Canadians celebrate this day on the second Monday of October. And people in the United States celebrate it on the fourth Thursday of November.
Thanksgiving has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions. However, people have long celebrated it as a secular holiday as well. The first day after Thanksgiving Day—Black Friday—marks the start of the Christmas shopping season.
This year’s Thanksgiving holiday falls on Nov. 25, which is today. On Thanksgiving Day, families and friends usually gather for a large meal or dinner. Moreover many people will celebrate the holiday by eating mass amounts of turkey, watching parades and football and trying to avoid political discussions with their family.
However, the best part of Thanksgiving is obviously the food. Thanksgiving food is based on the fruits, vegetables and poultry that is native to the Americas. It’s for example: turkey, pumpkin, potatoes and cranberries.
